Trains

Question

Q1. Two stations P and Q are 110 km apart on a track. one train starts from P to Q at 9 am at 40km/hr. Another train starts from Q to P at 11 am at 50 km/hr . At what time both train will meet ?

(a) 1 pm (b) 12:10 pm (c) 11:20 am (d) 11 am

Solution.
(c) 11:20 am
Solution

Q2. Two trains of the same length but with different speeds pass a static pole in 5 seconds and 6 seconds respectively. In what time will they cross each other when they are moving in the same direction .

(a) 1 minutes (b) 2 minutes (c) 3 minutes (d) 4 minutes

Solution.
(a) 1 minutes
Solution

Q3. The speed of a bus in 72km/hr. The distance covered by the bus in 5 seconds ie .
(a)100m (b)60m (c)50m (d)654m

Solution.
Speed of bus = 72km/hr
= (72 x 5/18)metre/second
20 metre/second
Required distance
20 x 5 = 100 metre
Solution

Q4. A train travels from A and B at the rate of 30 km/hr and from B to A at the rate of 40 km/hr. what is the average rate for the whole journey ?

(a) 40 km/hr (b) 240/7 km/hr (c) 90 km/hr (d) 38 km/hr

Solution.
A =
2xy/x + y

A =
2 x 30 x 40/30 + 40
=
2400/7

=
240/7
km/hr
Solution

Q5. Two trains are moving in the same direction at 50km/hr and 30km/hr . The faster train crosses a man in the slower train in 18 seconds . Find the length of the faster train .

Solution.
Relative speed = 20km/hr = 50/9m/sec

distance covered in 18 seconds = 100m

so length of the faster train is 100 m
Solution

Q6. A train passes a pole in 15 seconds and passes a platform 100m long in 25 seconds . Find its length .

Solution.
Let the length of the train = xm; then , equating the speeds ,

x/15 = (x+100)/25

or , 25x = 15x + 100 x 15

or, 10x = 1500

∴ x = 150m

Length of the train = 150m
Solution

Q7. A train travelling 20 km/hr leaves place A at 8 am and another train travelling 30 km/hr starts at 2 p.m in the same direction. How many km from place A will they be together ?

(a) 60 km (b) 300 km (c) 200 km (d) 150 km

Solution.
(b) 300 km
Solution

Q8. How long will a train 130m long travelling at 40km/hr take to pass a km stone .

Solution.
time = total distance / speed = 0.130/40hr = (0.130 x 60 x 60)/40 = 11.7seconds
Solution

Q9. Two trains of the same length with different speeds pass a electric pole in 30 seconds and 4 seconds respectively. In what time will they cross each other when they are moving in the same direction .

(a) 24 sec (b) 30 sec (c) 35 sec (d) 45 sec

Solution.
(a) 24 sec
Solution

Q10. Average speed of a train is 60 km/hr , without stoppage and with stoppage it travels the same distance at an average speed of 40 km/hr . How many minutes per hour does the train stops ?

(a) 18 minutes (b) 20 minutes (c) 10 minutes (d) 25 minutes

Solution.
(b) 20 minutes
Solution
